Tom MacMillan to Spearhead College Recruiting for FCA

FCA Northeast has tapped coach Tom MacMillan as the new Northeast College Recruitment Coordinator. MacMillan helped coach the FCA 2018 this past fall and also is the Head Varsity Girls Coach at Rush-Henrietta. MacMillan brings over two decades of coaching experience to the FCA program.

MacMillan said, “When Sean McNamara approached me with the position, I was very excited. In my girls’ program, one of the things I have tried to do with each of the student athletes I know personally is to point her in the right direction of what would match her own needs: a college that was right for her — not necessarily a Division I, II or III school, but one that was the right fit. I was attracted to the opportunity Sean presented me to try to help all FCA players find the right place for college.”

MacMillan has had experience with helping people with school-to-college transition and the recruitment process for years. Several years ago, he began a club at Rush-Henrietta called the College Athletic Club where the focus was on answering such questions as: “How do I go about finding the right school? Contacting a coach? Where is that spot where I are going to fit in perfectly?”

In his new FCA role, MacMillan will form a team of people to assist in the recruitment process. He plans to use the network of FCA coaches, combined with the high school coaches and the families, to put together the strongest team possible for each FCA players’ best future interest at the college level. He believes it is important to include the high school coach in the selection process. “From my experience, oftentimes, the coach is left off in the decision-making, but nobody knows their kid better from both a playing standpoint and a personal standpoint as far as behavior, grades, what their parents are like. So, when we include the high school coach in the decision-making process, we can have the most accurate picture of who the kid is and make the best fit for that player.” said MacMillan.

MacMillan looks forward to working with families to help them find the right place for their kids to play in college – the school that has the major they are looking for, where they can also play the game they love so much. He has been able to witness firsthand the benefits that can come from finding the right ‘fit’ for college: “There was no greater pleasure than watching my older daughter blossom while playing lacrosse, a sport she loves at Tiffin University, and getting a great four year education. I know this can be done with all of our FCA athletes; it’s a reasonable thing for all kids to enjoy if we can find the right place for them.”
